Limited Companies

Complete accounting for limited companies — statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT, payroll, Companies House and the directors' own tax — run as one joined-up service by one UK-based team.

A limited company is a compliance machine that must be fed on schedule: accounts to Companies House, corporation tax returns to HMRC on a different timetable, confirmation statements, VAT, PAYE, registers, and the directors' personal returns orbiting the whole thing. Run separately, these leak — the company's accountant does not see the director's position, dividends outrun reserves, deadlines live in nobody's calendar.

Acumon runs it as a single system: every filing owned and diarised, the company and its directors planned together — because owner-managed company tax happens at the seam between the two — and a named accountant who knows the business well enough to advise, not just file.

The Compliance Machine, Fed on Time

Statutory accounts prepared under the right framework and filed at Companies House; corporation tax computations and returns with reliefs actually claimed — capital allowances, loss choices made deliberately; VAT under MTD; payroll and RTI through our CIPP-qualified team; confirmation statements and statutory registers maintained. Every deadline in our calendar with margin, not yours at midnight.

The Company and Its Directors, Planned Together

Most limited company tax value sits in the seam: salary-dividend-pension mix reviewed annually as rules move, dividends paid lawfully from evidenced reserves with proper paperwork, directors' loan accounts kept out of the s455 trap, family shareholdings structured properly, and the timing games between company year-end and personal tax year played deliberately. We prepare the directors' self assessments alongside the company's return, so the two positions are one plan.

Numbers That Run the Business

Beyond compliance, the books should tell you things: management accounts when decisions need more than instinct, margin and cash visibility from cloud bookkeeping kept current, and an accountant who reviews what the numbers say — before you commit to the hire, the premises, the price change. Companies that only hear from their accountant at year-end are buying filing, not accounting.

Events a Company Grows Into

Limited companies accumulate events: crossing the audit thresholds, taking investment, adding subsidiaries or a holding company, share reorganisations, acquisitions, and eventually sale or succession. Each is a specialism, and each is in the building — audit, due diligence, valuations, demergers, employee ownership. The company that starts with our small-business service and ends at a sale never changes firm; the file, and the institutional memory, travel intact.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What filings does a limited company actually have to make each year?
At minimum: annual accounts to Companies House (nine months after year-end), a corporation tax return to HMRC (twelve months after year-end, with the tax itself due at nine months and a day), and a confirmation statement annually — plus VAT returns if registered, RTI submissions every payday if anyone is paid, P11Ds where benefits exist, and event-driven filings for changes of directors, shares or PSCs. Three regulators, different clocks. Clients hand us the calendar entirely, which is rather the point.
Can I just take money out of my company when I need it?
Not casually — every pound out has a legal character: salary through payroll, dividends only from accumulated profits with minutes and vouchers, loans that trigger a 33.75% s455 charge if outstanding nine months after year-end, plus benefit-in-kind interest rules. Informal drawings 'sorted later' are how clean companies acquire messy problems, and HMRC reclassifies undocumented extractions in its own favour. We set up a clean extraction rhythm so money moves when you need it, correctly.
My company's grown. When do we need an audit?
When you exceed two of three thresholds for two consecutive years — for financial years from 6 April 2025: £15m turnover, £7.5m total assets, 50 employees — or earlier if a group, regulator or shareholders require it, and sometimes voluntarily because lenders or an approaching sale want audited numbers. The transition goes far better prepared than discovered: as a registered audit firm we see companies arrive at their first audit in both states, and the difference is weeks of pain.
We have an accountant but only hear from them once a year. Is that normal?
It is common, which is not the same as adequate. Year-end-only service means every opportunity with an in-year deadline — dividend timing, pension contributions before year-end, VAT scheme changes, loan account repairs — is discovered after it expired. The test worth applying: has your accountant ever told you something you didn't ask about? Moving firms is administratively trivial (we handle clearance and records), and new-client reviews almost always find money the silence cost.
