Freelancers

Accounting for freelancers — self assessment done properly, expenses claimed with confidence, Making Tax Digital handled before it handles you, and straight advice on when a limited company starts earning its keep.

Freelancing means every hour has a price, and the hours freelancers spend dreading tax admin are the most expensive of all: receipts in a drawer, a January panic, and the permanent background hum of not being sure — about expenses, about the payment on account that ambushed you, about whether you should have a company by now.

Acumon replaces the hum with a system: simple digital bookkeeping that takes minutes a week, a return prepared early enough that January is just a payment date, allowable expenses claimed fully because someone who knows the rules is looking, and an annual conversation about the structural question every freelancer carries — sole trader or limited?

Self Assessment Without the January Panic

We prepare your return from records kept painlessly through the year — bank feeds and receipt capture, minutes a week — file it well before the deadline, and explain the payments on account system that generates most freelancer cash-flow shocks: why July demands money, how to reduce payments when income drops, and what to set aside monthly so the bill is a transfer, not a crisis.

Expenses: Everything You're Entitled To

Freelancers systematically under-claim out of caution and over-worry out of folklore. The rules are knowable: home working costs by proportion or flat rate, travel and its traps, equipment through capital allowances, phone, software, subscriptions, training within its boundaries. We claim what the law allows, document what needs documenting, and give you a simple keep-this-receipt rule for the grey areas — confidence in both directions.

Making Tax Digital Is Coming for You

MTD for income tax pulls self-employed people above the income threshold into quarterly digital reporting — phased in from April 2026 — replacing one annual return with a rhythm of submissions from digital records. Freelancers on spreadsheets and shoeboxes have a transition to make, and making it early is painless while making it late is not. We set up compliant, genuinely simple record-keeping now, so the quarterly rhythm arrives as a non-event.

Sole Trader or Limited: the Annual Question

The company question has a numerical answer that changes as your profits, plans and the tax rules move. Incorporation buys lower headline rates, liability protection and a professional wrapper at the price of admin, accounts and running two tax positions instead of one. We rerun your numbers each year and tell you when the crossover genuinely arrives — and when it does, formation, registrations and the transition are handled in the same firm.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't earn huge amounts. Is an accountant worth it for me?
At modest freelance incomes the fee is small and typically recovers itself through two things: expenses you were under-claiming and penalties you were risking. Add MTD's quarterly regime approaching for incomes above the threshold, and the value case strengthens: the transition is much easier with someone setting it up properly. We are honest at the genuinely-small end too — if your affairs are simple enough that software alone serves you, we will say so.
What are payments on account and why did July surprise me?
Once your self assessment bill passes £1,000, HMRC assumes next year will match this year and demands it in advance — half on 31 January, half on 31 July — so your first crossing of that line brings roughly one and a half years of tax in one January. It is the single most common freelancer cash shock. We forecast it before it happens, tell you the monthly set-aside that makes it painless, and claim reductions when your income genuinely falls.
Do I need to register for VAT?
Mandatorily, only when your rolling 12-month turnover crosses the registration threshold — which freelancers must actually monitor, because it sneaks up mid-year and late registration means owing VAT you never charged. Voluntarily, earlier registration can pay when your clients are VAT-registered businesses and you have real input costs to recover; it usually does not when you bill consumers. We watch the threshold as part of the service and run the voluntary question on your actual numbers.
When does a limited company become worth it?
There is no magic profit figure, despite the folklore — the crossover depends on how much you need to extract versus retain, your other income, pension intentions and appetite for admin, and recent tax changes have narrowed the gap at modest profits. Retention is the real lever: profits left in the company for investment or timing are where incorporation still clearly pays. We rerun your crossover annually; when the answer flips, you will hear it from us first.
