Private Client Tax

Personal tax advice and planning for individuals whose affairs deserve more than a form-filling service — directors, landlords, investors and internationally mobile clients.

Personal tax stops being simple long before most people notice. A second income source, a property sale, share options, a move abroad, an inheritance — each adds rules, elections and deadlines that a once-a-year tax return service is not designed to catch in time. Private client work means watching the whole position, not just the January deadline.

Acumon's private client team — chartered tax advisors, many with prior HMRC experience — acts for individuals year-round: planning ahead of decisions, handling the filings that follow, and dealing with HMRC so you never have to. One team, across income tax, capital gains, inheritance tax and residence questions.

Personal Tax Planning

Most personal tax is set by decisions made during the year: when income is taken, how savings and investments are held between spouses, whether pension contributions or Gift Aid are made before 5 April, and how the tapering of allowances at higher incomes is managed. We review your position before the tax year end, while the levers can still be pulled, and give specific recommendations rather than generic checklists.

Capital Gains and Property

Capital gains tax rewards planning and punishes surprises. Disposals of residential property must be reported and paid within 60 days — a deadline that catches many sellers unaware — and the timing of any disposal against tax years, losses and reliefs can change the bill materially. We plan disposals in advance where possible and handle the 60-day returns and self assessment reporting when they happen.

Inheritance Tax and Passing On Wealth

Inheritance tax is the tax people plan for last, yet it responds to planning better than almost any other: lifetime gifts, exemptions used consistently year after year, the residence nil-rate band protected rather than accidentally lost, and business or agricultural reliefs preserved through how assets are held. We review exposure, quantify it, and set out practical steps — coordinated with our estate and probate team where that is needed.

Residence, Domicile and International Lives

Clients who move countries, work across borders or hold overseas assets face the UK's statutory residence test, split-year rules and the post-domicile regime for foreign income and gains. The stakes are high and the rules are mechanical — day counts and ties matter. Acumon advises expatriates, non-doms and inbound individuals as a core part of the practice, so this is familiar ground rather than an occasional referral.

Compliance, Handled Quietly

Planning only works if the filings that follow are right. We prepare self assessment returns, capital gains reports and the disclosures that international positions require, file everything on time, and respond to HMRC letters on your behalf. If HMRC opens an enquiry, our tax investigation specialists — several formerly of HMRC — take over the correspondence.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How is private client tax different from a standard tax return service?
A tax return service records what already happened; private client work shapes what happens next. The return is included, but the value sits in the planning around it — timing income and disposals, using allowances before they lapse, and spotting issues like the 60-day property deadline or a residence question before they become expensive. If your affairs involve more than a single salary, the difference usually pays for itself.
Who do you act for?
Company directors and shareholders, landlords and property investors, partners and the self-employed, individuals with share options or investment portfolios, and internationally mobile clients — expatriates, non-doms and people relocating to or from the UK. Many private clients come to us alongside their business, because planning the two together is where the biggest savings sit.
Can you help with inheritance tax planning?
Yes. We start by quantifying the exposure — many families are surprised in both directions — then set out practical steps: using lifetime exemptions consistently, timing gifts against the seven-year rule, protecting the residence nil-rate band, and preserving business relief where it applies. Where wills, estates or probate are involved, our estate and probate team works alongside the tax advisors so the advice joins up.
I've sold a UK residential property — what is the 60-day rule?
Since 2020, UK residents disposing of residential property at a gain must file a standalone return and pay the capital gains tax within 60 days of completion — separate from, and much earlier than, the normal self assessment deadline. Non-residents must report UK property disposals within 60 days even where no tax is due. Late filing brings penalties and interest. If a sale is under way or recently completed, contact us promptly and we will deal with the return.
What does it cost?
Fixed fees, agreed before work starts. A typical engagement combines an annual planning review with the self assessment return, at a set annual fee; one-off advice — a disposal, a residence question, an IHT review — is quoted as a defined piece of work. You will never receive an hourly-rate surprise from us.
